Eero Saarinen vowed to address the “ugly, confusing, unrestful world” he observed underneath chairs and tables -- the so-called "slum of legs." A five-year design investigation led him to the revolutionary Pedestal Collection, introduced in 1958, which was inspired by a drop of high-viscosity liquid. His now-iconic Pedestal table features a cast-aluminum base with abrasion-resistant Rilsan® finish and a solid marble, wood veneer or laminate tabletop. Stone masters carefully select marble with the best composition and veining to create tops for marble Saarinen Pedestal Tables. Please rest assured that each one’s unique markings are the very traits that make it a true one of a kind. Coated marble tops have a transparent, high-polish, polyester coating and satin-coated marble tops have a matte satin polyester coating; both types help protect against stains. The satin finish gives the stone a natural, honed appearance while providing the same protection as coated marbles. Marble tops are .75" thick with a beveled-edge. MAINTENANCE: As a natural product the marble tabletops are quite durable and don’t require high maintenance. The Saarinen marble tabletops are sealed with a transparent polyester coating, creating a non-porous surface to prevent use-associated stains. For daily care and maintenance you can wash the surface with lukewarm water; for a more thorough cleaning you can clean with a non-abrasive solution such as Windex or rinse with warm water and dry with a soft cloth. It is important to note that if you proceed with a white based marble as opposed to the darker marbles (e.g. Nero Marquina) the coating may yellow over time giving the marble a warmer tone.
