Details Made in Italy. Dinnerware designed by American conceptual artist Sol LeWitt in Deruta, Italy as part of the Dinner Service collection. In the early 1980s, LeWitt and his family bought a farmhouse in Spoleto, Italy. While looking for new dishes in Rome, LeWitt and his wife Carol discovered the maiolica pottery was made locally, in Deruta, Italy as part of a 600-year-old tradition. Maiolica is a technique of applying a gloss glaze whitened with tin oxide onto fired pottery and finished with vivid, hand-painted colors before firing a second time. In the fashion of LeWitt's minimalist and conceptual wall drawings and structures, the Dinner Service dishes showcase geometric proportion coupled with the handmade nature of this Italian tradition.
